Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn Continues
Its 155th Anniversary Celebration!
BAY RIDGE – Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn recently welcomed students, parents, faculty and staff back to school in continued celebration of the historic Bay Ridge private school’s 155th academic year. On Wednesday, September 12th, 2018, Adelphians gathered in the John Lockwood Auditorium Theatre (named for the Academy’s founder) to meet their classmates and teachers before heading up to class to officially begin the 2018-2019 year.
“As we continue to build upon last year’s theme of ‘around the world in 155 years’ and conclude our celebration of Adelphi Academy’s historic anniversary year, we are equally excited to move ahead with our 156th year of providing unparalleled care and education of the total child,” said Adelphi’s Head of School Ms. Iphigenia Romanos.
The school year started off with an action-packed first week filled with team-building exercises that saw Middle and Upper School students work together with their new Lower School housemates to create public service announcements for their respective Houses — Morrill, Lockwood, Ellinwood and Levermore — each named for some of Adelphi’s earliest leaders. Adelphi’s House System allows for each house to accumulate points throughout the year for individual and class-wide academic, extra-curricular, social and service-related achievements, as well as demonstrations of good character and kindness. The house with the most points accumulated by year’s end has its name etched into the annals of Adelphi history, literally, in the form of a trophy that is displayed in the Academy’s Main Hall all year round. Last year’s winners, members of House Lockwood, are eager to defend their crown.
“The implementation of Adelphi’s House System allowed students to be part of something positive and fun that provided immediate as well as long-term recognition for conducting themselves in a manner befitting of Adelphi’s earliest founders,” said Director of Academy Operations Mr. Albert C. Corhan. “Last year’s winners, House Lockwood, set a very high standard and have rightfully seen their House name etched in history.”
The new school year also continued the popular Activities Day program, during which all students enjoy scheduled class time once a week devoted to non-traditional classes, activities and electives such as Robotics, Inventive Writing, Dance, Ceramics, Publications, Theatre, European Handball and many more.
“This structured and meaningful activities component serves as a chance for creativity, exercise, collaboration, teamwork and conversation to be at the forefront of the school day,” Ms. Romanos said. “We’ve taken the concept introduced last year and improved upon it even further so it’s going to be an exciting year.”
In addition, families were welcomed for a very special unveiling of the Academy’s fully renovated, state-of-the-art Technology & Design Laboratory, which features more than 30 terminals, a brand new SMART Board, three SMART TV displays and a dedicated section of high-end machines for use by the Academy’s growing Publications staff.
Ahead for the Academy is its Annual Fall Auction of Fine Art, Cigar Night & Cocktail Reception, to be held on October 12th, 2018 in the John Lockwood Auditorium Theatre. The evening creates an elegant atmosphere in which families and guests can bid on authentic, one-of-a-kind collectibles, fine art, movie, music, theater and political memorabilia, as well as original student artwork, with proceeds benefiting the Academy’s programs. Tickets are still available and can be obtained by contacting Adelphi’s Main Office at (718) 238-3308.
