Get to Know Adelphi’s November 2019 Students of the Month!
Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn’s October 2019 Students of the Month: Nicole (Lower School), Rebecca (Middle School), Ilona (Upper School), Emma (Student-Artist) and Maverick (Scholar-Athlete).
BAY RIDGE – Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn’s prestigious “Student of the Month” program continued with a special assembly inside the John Lockwood Auditorium Theatre in early December to recognize five outstanding students who demonstrated extraordinary effort during the month of November. Nicole (Lower School), Rebecca (Middle School), Ilona (Upper School), Emma (Student-Artist) and Maverick (Scholar-Athlete) were each recognized in front of the entire Adelphi community and received official certificates signed by Head of School Ms. Iphigenia Romanos. They recently sat down with the Panther Press Room for an exclusive interview, during which they shared some details about themselves and their experiences at Adelphi.
Lower School Student of the Month Nicole knows what it means to have been selected for his prestigious honor. “I did a good job!” she smiled. She said she was excited, happy and proud to be recognized. Nicole loves to play with toys at school and at home and makes sure everyone joins in on the fun. “I always share,” she said. When she grows up, she knows exactly what she wants to be. “I want to be a princess because they’re beautiful, famous and rich!” she giggled.
Lower School faculty member Ms. Baalbaki said, “Nicole is a remarkable student. She is always eager and ready to learn. Nicole is a wonderful friend to all her classmates and works very well with others. She has been showing excellent progress throughout the term. I am so proud of Nicole’s hard work!”
Middle School Student of the Month Rebecca wants to be a doctor when she grows up. Though she excels in Science, she said her favorite subject is English. “I like everything, actually,” she said. The well-rounded Adelphian also enjoys art class. “I really like to draw,” she said. She has a lot of memories at Adelphi that she will always cherish, and she has some advice for students who may be looking to become Student of the Month. “Listen and always try your best,” she said.
Homeroom teacher Ms. Wong said, “Rebecca is a hardworking student who is friendly with her classmates. She always strives to do her best in her classes. She uses critical thinking in and out of the classroom.”
Upper School Student of the Month Ilona has certainly established herself as a leader among her peers. An active member of Adelphi’s Theater Arts Program, she auditioned for and landed a leading role in Adelphi’s Winter 2020 production, The Adelphian Masquers’ 5 Year Anniversary Show! “I was nervous my first time, but now I enjoy helping others get comfortable on stage,” she said. “I’m looking forward to the production.” Ilona has also taken a leadership role as a new member of Adelphi’s Student Advisory Board. “I like to organize and plan, as well as keep the students informed about upcoming activities,” she said. As co-managing editor of The Adelphi Oracle, Ilona puts in extra time to work on the Academy’s newspaper and make sure all of the stories and images are of the highest quality. The paper has grown and expanded each year since she joined the staff. Her advice to younger students looking to make a name for themselves is simple. “Never be afraid to put yourself out there,” she said.
Homeroom teacher Mr. DeCrescenzo said, “Ilona has a great sense of humor and always strives to give her best effort. She is always willing to help the students around her and I am very proud of her for receiving Upper School Student of the Month honors.”
November Students of the Month were recognized at a special assembly held in their honor.
Student-Artist of the Month Emma was very happy to be recognized for her artwork. “I love to draw animals,” she said. “Cats are my favorite!” The creative Lower Schooler is always drawing and would like to pursue her art professionally one day. “I want to be an artist. Art makes me happy,” she said. Emma enjoys her time at Adelphi and is thankful to all of her teachers for helping her on a daily basis. “I really like coming to school,” she smiled.
Art Instructor Ms. Fregara said, “Emma sparkles as she enters the Art Studio. Her excitement pours into her artwork and she has a love for drawing, especially with markers! After Emma is finished with her artwork, she enjoys working in the coloring corner and gets inspiration from my ‘How to Draw Cute Stuff’ book. Emma shows a lot of effort and I am so proud of how much she has progressed from the beginning of the trimester. Keep on shining like the art star you are, Emma!”
Scholar-Athlete of the Month Maverick enjoys playing and watching football. “I’m very strong and fast,” he said. Whenever he races against his friends in gym class, he sees his natural athletic abilities shine through. “I always finish first!” he smiled. When he found out he had been named Scholar-Athlete of the Month, Maverick was overjoyed. “It felt great!” he said. He has a strong interest in comic books and superheroes, but said his favorite character is actually a super villain. “I love Venom,” he giggled. “But if I could be a hero, I would be Spider Man.” How does Maverick stay physically fit and strong throughout the year? It starts with a healthy diet. “Goldfish and water are the perfect snack!” he said.
Lower School faculty member Ms. Churchill said, “Maverick is a team player. He shows excellent sportsmanship and is always willing to help his classmates. Maverick always tries his best and never gives up. I am very proud of him!”
