BAY RIDGE — When it comes to modeling your holiday sweaters, the uglier the better at Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn! As the holidays approached, Adelphians of all ages came to school dressed in hideously awesome sweaters and walked the runway for Adelphi’s Annual Ugly Holiday Sweater Contest, held inside the John Lockwood Auditorium Theatre. Students, faculty and staff enjoyed showing off their custom creations — many of which featured grotesque lizards, dinosaurs and monsters draped in holiday decorations like tinsel, ornaments and lights.
After each student had walked the runway, a panel of judges deliberated and compared notes to determine first, second and third prize winners in each age group. Lower School first place winner Ella’s sweater featured tons of shiny tinsel. Second place winner Nicole sported a giant red bow on the back of her sweater. Third place winner Mark wore a sweater featuring Santa Claus striking a funny pose. Middle School first place winner Emma came dressed as a holiday tree, complete with a star on her head! Second place winner Kenn’s sweater featured a llama wearing sunglasses and a scarf. Third place winner Alex impressed the judges with his handmade sweater featuring holiday cutouts pasted all over the front and back. Upper School first place winner Ariel lit up the runway, literally, as his sweater featured colorful holiday lights. Second place winner Antimo’s sweater featured Santa with lights adorning his beard. Third place winner Richard wore a sweater that featured a muscular Santa striking a pose.

Members of Adelphi’s faculty and staff also participated in the contest and walked the runway, showcasing their creativity with sweaters decked out in glitter and holiday images. Student Advisory Board members William, Susan and Ilona served as judges for the faculty contest and awarded top prize to Ms. N. Baalbaki for her holiday sweater featuring a real holiday snow globe ornament embedded into the fabric.

“Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn’s Annual Ugly Holiday Sweater Contest allows everyone to have fun while showing off their most outrageous holiday outfits,” Head of School Ms. Iphigenia Romanos said. “Our students and staff showcased their creativity by dressing in unique and elaborate sweaters, then posing for photos and walking the runway to loud applause. Congratulations to all of this year’s winners and happy holidays to all Adelphians!”

As the oldest private, independent, continuing, coeducational, college-preparatory day school in the borough and one of the oldest in the nation, Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn, “the little school of big dreams” has been “effectively preparing young people for college, career, and life, one day at a time” for over 150 years.
