Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn Welcomes Students
Back to School for Historic 157th Academic Year!
BAY RIDGE – Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn officially welcomed students, parents, faculty and staff back to school on Monday, September 9th, 2019, kicking off the historic Bay Ridge private school’s 157th academic year. Adelphians of all ages gathered inside the John Lockwood Auditorium Theatre (named for the Academy’s founder) to meet their classmates and teachers before heading up to class to officially begin the 2019-2020 year.
“We are extremely excited to begin our historic 157th academic year and look forward to continuing Adelphi’s commitment to the education of the total child,” Adelphi’s Head of School Ms. Iphigenia Romanos said. “We are proud to announce that the theme for this academic year is ‘The Best Day of My Life!’ and our aim is to create the most rewarding experience for all of our students and families. With so many new activities, class trips and academic programs being planned and implemented this year, we feel confident that every day spent inside these hallowed halls can and will be the best day ever!”
The school year started off with an action-packed first week filled with team-building exercises that saw Middle and Upper School students work together with their new Lower School housemates to create new crests for their respective Houses — Morrill, Lockwood, Ellinwood and Levermore — each named for some of Adelphi’s earliest leaders. Adelphi’s House System allows for each house to accumulate points throughout the year for individual and class-wide academic, extracurricular, social and service-related achievements, as well as demonstrations of good character and kindness. The house with the most points accumulated by year’s end has its name etched into the annals of Adelphi history, literally, in the form of a trophy that is displayed in the Academy’s Main Hall all year round. Last year’s winners, members of House Morrill, are eager to defend their crown.
“Adelphi’s House System allows students to be part of something positive and fun that provides immediate as well as long-term recognition for conducting themselves in a manner befitting of Adelphi’s earliest leaders,” Director of Academy Operations Mr. Albert C. Corhan said. “Last year’s winners, House Morrill, set a very high standard and have rightfully seen their House name etched in history.”
The new school year also saw the implementation of a SHTEAM-based honors program that will allow students to nurture their individual strengths and interests in Science, Humanities, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. Students and faculty are looking forward to a more hands-on experience inside the Academy’s state-of-the-art Science Laboratory, as well as the Technology & Design Laboratory. Plans were also announced for a brand new program devoted to the study of music at the Academy, aptly titled the Adelphi Rocks Musical Arts Program. Also, members of Adelphi’s Theater Arts Program announced that the winter 2020 theatrical production would be a celebration of the revitalized program’s fifth year. “The Adelphian Masquers’ 5 Year Anniversary Show” will feature a compilation of scenes and songs from each of Adelphi’s past productions, Ms. Romanos announced.
“The year ahead promises to be filled with exciting events taking place both inside and outside the classroom, each of which is designed to enhance the overall experience of our students and families,” Ms. Romanos explained. “Whether it is through their academic achievements, their extracurricular involvement, or, ideally, a combination of both, Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn students are always given ample opportunity to shine!”
Ahead for the Academy is its Annual Fall Auction of Fine Art, Cigar Night & Cocktail Reception, to be held on October 11th, 2019 inside the John Lockwood Auditorium Theatre. The evening creates an elegant atmosphere in which families and guests can bid on authentic, one-of-a-kind collectibles, fine art, movie, music, theater and political memorabilia, as well as original student artwork, with proceeds benefiting the Academy’s programs. Tickets are still available and can be obtained by contacting Adelphi’s Main Office at (718) 238-3308.
